Life transforms / La vida se transforma

The Pajaro Mural is a powerful symbol of resilience, unity, and renewal following the devastating 2023 flood. Designed by Hijos del Sol in collaboration with Community Bridges and local residents, the mural transforms a prominent wall in the heart of Pajaro into a lasting landmark of healing and hope.

Spanning approximately 160 feet by 25 feet, the artwork is rooted in lived experience. Its design was shaped by the voices of Pajaro residents who shared their stories, struggles, and hopes through post-flood case management and community workshops, ensuring the mural authentically reflects Pajaro’s identity, heritage, and strength.

The project was made possible through California Assembly Bill 102 (AB102), thanks to advocacy by local and state leaders including Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas and State Senator John Laird as well as the County of Monterey. Funding is administered by the Community Foundation for Monterey County. Together, Community Bridges and Hijos del Sol combined resources to bring this community-driven mural to life—creating a landmark Pajaro residents can celebrate and draw strength from for generations to come.

We invite you to stop by and view this celebratory mural. Please click on each of the three panels below to learn more about the stories depicted in the mural.

Hijos del Sol Arts Productions is a Salinas-based nonprofit arts organization founded in 1994 by muralist and educator José G. Ortiz. For more than 30 years, Hijos del Sol has provided free, high-quality arts programming and mentorship to youth — rooted primarily in East Salinas and open to everyone from anywhere — through its Open Arts Studio, school partnerships, and community mural projects across Monterey County.

Hijos del Sol is known for its distinctive, youth-centered studio model: students are encouraged to create what they want, in their own style and voice, without rigid templates or step-by-step “follow-me” projects. Artist-mentors support each young person’s ideas and imagination, helping them develop skills while preserving creative freedom and personal expression.

Hijos del Sol is a creative sanctuary where youth lead their own artistic path, supported by caring mentors. Many of those mentors are former participants who grew up in the program and now return as instructors and lead muralists.

In addition to youth development, the organization is widely recognized for large-scale public murals that reflect community identity, history, and resilience. Murals are developed through community listening, research, and collaborative design, resulting in public artworks that are both artistically strong and locally meaningful.
