We commend Sheriff Jim Hart and the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office for their decision to cut ties with the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP)—a federal grant that undermines public trust by requiring local agencies to share immigration-related data.This situation also highlights a broader concern: federal partnerships across various sectors may, knowingly or unknowingly, lead to the sharing of immigration information that could be later weaponized.
